I researched and wrote my first grant in 1988- a Department of Commerce Telecommunications grant to build and equip a radio studio to broadcast readings for blind and visually impaired persons.
I literally had no idea what I was doing when I started- and white knuckled it right up to FedExing eight copies of a several hundred-page proposal with the submission deadline breathing down my neck. Several months later it was approved and the WHIL-Radio Reading Service in Mobile, Alabama was born.
Now living just outside of Syracuse, New York, my career has been as an Executive Director and Development Director with small non-profit organizations- a large part of which has been securing grant funding in support of programs and operations. I know the demands on time and money so many of you face as you struggle to create and sustain your programs and meet the needs of those your mission calls you to serve.
There are no magic potions for getting grant funding. It takes research and relationship building. It takes strategic vision and planning. It takes the nuts and bolts of budgets, compelling narratives, and measurable outcomes, and follow up reporting. Even the most well put together projects and proposals do not always get funded, but there is always much to learn from the process to make your organization stronger.
Whether it is developing grant seeking strategies or putting together proposals for specific funding from private foundations, local or state governments, or federal agencies, I will work with your team throughout the whole process- following your wishes as to the scope of services you wish me to provide.
